Can you introduce yourself ? Tell us about your bands, your line-ups ?

I am Paul Caporino. I have been M.O.T.O. since 1981. I have had many different line-ups but I am still here.

Your ideal band - bass, guitar, alone ? Beatbox or drums ?

I like guitar, bass and drums. I prefer a trio.

Can you tell us a few words that would describe your music ?

I try to make M.O.T.O. upbeat and energizing. I want people to feel better when they hear M.O.T.O.

Which label do you work with or would like to work with ?

Currently I’m working with Criminal IQ Records in Chicago, and I’m also recording a few 7"s with various other labels. Also Red Lounge in Germany wants to do a 2LP of our Single File CD with extra tracks. I hope I can get it finished in time for the tour.

Is Chicago a rock city ?

Very much so.

Do you live on your music ? Or do you have a job beside music ?

I also work at RecordEmporium.com - we sell music and DVDs over the internet.

What is the origin of the name « M.O.T.O » ?

It stands for Masters Of The Obvious.

What was the first 7" you bought ?

Creedence Clearwater Revival - "Bad Moon Rising"/"Lodi"

Which band or artist inspired you the desire to make music ?

The Beatles.

The first concert you’ve seen ?

Peter, Paul and Mary at Loyola Fieldhouse, New Orleans 1969 with my big sister Diane.

Beatles or Stones ?

Beatles, but I like the Stones too. I think their A Bigger Bang album is the best one the Stones have done in years.

Clash or pistols ?

Buzzcocks.

Sonics or Monkees ?

Both !

CD or vinyle ?

Right now CD - but I love old records.

Which band(s) do you feel close to ?

JJ Cale.

What were the bands that accompanied you in concerts ?

M.O.T.O. has played with Buzzcocks, Alternative TV, Vibrators, Redd Kross, Beat Happening, Flaming Lips, Smashing Pumpkins, Galaxie 500, Effigies, Superchunk, Half Japanese, Jesus Lizard, Urge Overkill, The Weirdos, The Zero Boys, The Germs, Naked Raygun, Lunachicks, Redwalls, Spitalfield, The Spits, The Muffs, Oblivians, Reatards, King Louie, Kajun SS, The Cynics, Volcano Suns, Aztec Camera, Cola Freaks, and many more that I can’t remember.

Can you tell us an anecdote about a tour ? How is your daily life on tour ?

In St. Etienne we drank moonshine from a jar with a dead viper inside. It was very strong but kept us very warm. Daily life on tour is boring till we play the show. I usually have a sore throat that I’m taking care of.

Which concert had the less numerous audience ? And the most numerous ?

I played an acoustic show in Chicago recently with only one person who wasn’t with the other acts or the bar.

The most ? I don’t know - I remember playing in at Atomino in Chemnitz, Germany for about 400 people. That was a great show.

What do you know about France (tours in France, french rock bands, ...) ?

Fabienne Shine from Shakin Street ! We played several French dates last tour. We didn’t do very well but I enjoy France very much. My mother is of French lineage (Cajun). I think we’ve played Malakoff (near Paris), Tulle and St. Etienne, where we had viper moonshine.

What is your favorite drug ?

Money !

More generally, what are you addicted to ?

Caffiene and money.

What do you think of illegal downloading of music on the web ? Is it a progress for the underground culture ?

I like to be paid for what I do, but if people can get it for free I can’t stop them. I went to the library, borrowed some CDs and recorded them onto iTunes for our iPod. So I guess I am as guilty as anyone.

Is freedom of expression true in the US today ?

Up to a certain point. Sometimes you can, sometimes you can’t. Our country is owned and operated by bad people.

What is your favorite motto ?

Better too much than not enough.

And, last question, have you ever met the Ramones ?

No. I met the Buzzcocks though.
